Special Provision 375 (SP 375) provides an exemption for certain small quantities of environmentally hazardous substances transported by road under UN3077 or UN3082.
It is commonly seen in Section 14 of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for environmentally hazardous products.
What Is the SP 375 Limit?
SP 375 applies to:
UN3077 – Environmentally Hazardous Substance, Solid, N.O.S.: 5 kg or less per single or inner packaging
UN3082 – Environmentally Hazardous Substance, Liquid, N.O.S.: 5 L or less per single or inner packaging
Provided the applicable packaging requirements are met, these quantities are generally not subject to the other dangerous goods transport requirements.
What Does This Mean in Practice?
For example, a product classified as UN3082, Class 9, Packing Group III supplied in 1 L bottles may qualify for the SP 375 exemption.
However, simply having UN3082 or UN3077 on an SDS does not automatically mean SP 375 can be applied. The quantity, packaging and applicable transport regulations must be checked.
Is SP 375 the Same as A197?
They are similar but apply under different transport regulations.
A197 is encountered for air freight, while SP 375 applies under road transport regulations that incorporate the provision.
Requirements can differ between road, sea and air, so an exemption used for one transport mode should not automatically be applied to another.
