When dangerous goods are transported by sea, certain shipping containers carrying dangerous goods must display the applicable UN number externally in accordance with the IMDG Code.
These markings allow shipping lines, ports, transport operators and emergency responders to quickly identify the dangerous goods associated with the container.
Under IMDG Code 5.3.2.1, one of the key requirements applies when packaged dangerous goods exceeding 4,000 kg gross mass are loaded into a shipping container, only one UN number has been assigned, and those goods are the only dangerous goods within the container.
UN number display requirements can also apply to certain other containerised dangerous goods movements, including applicable bulk and Class 7 consignments.
How Must the UN Number Be Displayed?
For shipping containers, one permitted method is to display the applicable UN number in black digits on an orange rectangular panel.
The panel must be at least:
- 300 mm wide
- 120 mm high
- Surrounded by a 10 mm black border
- The UN number must be displayed in black digits at least 65 mm high.
The orange UN number panel must be positioned immediately adjacent to each required dangerous goods placard or marine pollutant mark.
Why Are UN Number Markings Important?
The UN number is the internationally recognised four-digit number used to identify dangerous goods in transport. Displaying it clearly on the outside of a shipping container helps identify the cargo without needing to open or inspect the container.
This is particularly important during port handling, container movements, vessel loading, inspections and emergency response.
Incorrect, missing or poorly positioned markings may result in a container being held, rejected or requiring corrective marking before it can continue through the transport chain.
