What Are Class 6.1 Dangerous Goods?
When most people think of dangerous goods, they picture things like fuel, gas cylinders or explosives. But one class that often flies under the radar yet can be just as serious is Class 6.1: Toxic Substances.
If you're dealing with industrial chemicals, pest control products, lab supplies, or even some cleaning agents, you could be handling Class 6.1 goods without even realising it.
Class 6.1 is Toxic but Not Infectious
Class 6 is the umbrella for things that can cause harm to people through poisoning.
There are two sub-categories:
- 6.1 – Toxic substances (that are poisonous to humans or animals)
- 6.2 – Infectious substances (like medical waste or biological materials)
For now, we’re focusing on 6.1 which are toxins that don’t involve viruses or bacteria, but are still dangerous if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
What Kind of Stuff Falls into Class 6.1?
Here’s a rough idea of what you might find in this class:
- Industrial solvents and degreasers.
- Certain pesticides or fumigants.
- Some lab and pharmaceutical chemicals.
- Cyanide based products including sodium cyanide.
- Arsenic compounds.
- Some toxic cleaning agents.
Even small quantities can be deadly so proper handling, labelling and documentation is critical.
How Can These Substances Harm You?
The clue is in the name: toxic. These products can cause serious health effects or even death. The danger depends on:
- How much exposure there is.
- Whether it's inhaled, swallowed or touches your skin.
- How concentrated the substance is.
In some cases, even a tiny amount can be fatal, which is why the rules around transporting and storing Class 6.1 are so strict.
What Does This Mean for You as an Exporter or Freight Handler?
If you're shipping, receiving or even just storing these goods, you need to:
- Classify them properly by knowing your UN numbers and packing group
- Use the right packaging
- Label and placard correctly, including the skull-and-crossbones DG label.
- Provide the right documentation, like a DG Declaration and safety data sheet.
- Train your team, anyone handling or certifying these goods needs DG training.
Miss any of the above, and you're looking at delays, fines or worse, a serious safety incident.
